FREE SUPPORT GROUPS IN MINNESOTA

Support groups are not a substitute for medical treatment or psychological care. It is vital that you talk with your physician and a qualified mental health professional regarding eating disorder symptoms and treatment.

EATING DISORDERS ANONYMOUS Our primary purpose is to recover from our eating disorders and to carry this message of recovery to others with eating disorders. In EDA, we try to focus on the solution, not the problem. Solutions have to do with recognizing life choices and making them responsibly. Diets and weight management techniques do not solve our thinking problems. EDA endorses sound nutrition and discourages any form of rigidity around food.

EATING DISORDER RESEARCH PROGRAM The Eating Disorders Research Program conducts studies on Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder as well as on Obesity.

Current Studies:

ICAT Study for the Treatment of Bulimia Symptoms The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed therapy (Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy; ICAT) for the treatment of bulimic symptoms. In this study, each participant is randomized to receive the new therapy or a comparison therapy (CBT).

Although the content of the therapy treatments differ, both are administered by a trained, doctoral-level therapist for 21 sessions over 17 weeks. Each session lasts about an hour. You would meet two times per week for the first month, and then once per week for the remainder of the treatment phase.

If you decide to participate, we will ask you to complete two initial
evaluation sessions. These include interviews with you involving specific kinds of questions about your eating behavior and questions about your mental health, as well as a blood draw, urine sample, and brief physical exam. The entire evaluation should take five to six hours (two to three hours per visit). After this screening, you may be asked to participate in the study.

As part of the study, you will be asked to complete two additional
evaluations at the end of the treatment program (17 weeks) and four months later. These interviews will last two to three hours each, and you will be compensated $50 for completing the four-month evaluation visit.

Any information obtained during this study and identifying you will remain confidential and will be disclosed only with your written permission. All evaluation and treatment sessions will be audiotaped. You will be responsible for costs related to transportation to your office visits; however, your treatment and parking costs are free.

If interested, please contact our recruitment line (612-627-1991) to
determine eligibility or email me (anpalm@umn.edu) a phone number to reach you.

Anorexia Nervosa Palm Study The purpose of this study is to learn more about Anorexia Nervosa. This is not a treatment study: there is no treatment involved. If you are eligible and decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a series of  interviews and questionnaires, a blood draw, a urine sample, and a brief physical exam. This assessment phase lasts approximately 6 hours and is
broken up into 3 visits.

After completing this portion of the study you will be asked to carry a
palm pilot with you continuously for 2 weeks. During this time the palm pilot will randomly beep you 6 times/day to answer a series of questions on the palm pilot that will take 2-3 minutes to complete. You will also be asked to record certain behaviors on the palm pilot as they occur throughout the day. During this 2-week period you will come to our clinic for 3 upload visits in which we will collect data from the palm pilot, answer questions, and conduct an interview in which you will report your food intake for the previous day.

You will be paid $100 for each week that you carry the palm pilot. You may also earn a $50 bonus for responding to most of the palm pilot beeps on time (so within 45 minutes of when you are first notified) for a total of $250.

If you are interested in this study, please call our recruitment line at
612-627-1991 or email me (anpalm@umn.edu) a phone number to reach you at so that we can conduct a phone screen.
